General French

The General French course is a language program which offers a comprehensive study of the French language including the development of all skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and the study of all aspects (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation). The course syllabus is developed in accordance with the C.E.F. (Common European Framework) criteria of foreign language instruction.

The General French course is offered at three levels of language proficiency, both to students with zero or beginner knowledge and to advanced speakers of French who wish to achieve native fluency.

Level 1 – Elementary

Level 2 – Pre-Intermediate

Level 3 – Intermediate

The level of language proficiency is determined after the student takes a free placement test.

The length of study (the number of levels) is determined by the learner themselves and depends on their individual goals.

The primary focus in teaching is placed on the development of listening and speaking skills, which are vital for any information exchange. Putting meaningful communication at the center of the teaching process makes it possible for our students to feel immersed into the foreign language environment. Positive atmosphere during the class and techniques used by our teachers to increase motivation help our students overcome their initial anxiety and start to express themselves in the foreign language even at the beginner level. The following innovative methods are used to achieve this result: project work, case studies, communication games, TPR (Total Physical Response). Holding classes at all levels, including Elementary, exclusively in the French language, using the most reputable French textbooks, the most up-to-date teaching materials from the Internet, the latest video stories from international TV channels, all contribute to creating the atmosphere that fosters French language learning.

The main textbook for the General French course is Campus. It is benchmarked to the C.E.F. (Common European Framework) criteria of language instruction and offers a variety of engaging materials for study. In addition to Campus, a vast array of other teaching materials from the leading French publishing houses is included into the course syllabus to allow for a more comprehensive study of each of the course topics.

The standard length of study at each level of the General French course is approximately nine to ten months. Classes are held two times per week for two academic hours. The course is divided into semesters of 32 academic hours each.
We also offer a more intensive class schedule with classes meeting three times per week for two academic hours each. The semester includes 48 academic hours in such a case; the length of study covers a period of six to seven months.

The maximum group size is twelve students. However, the average group size is between eight to ten people.

After completing a course level (Pre-Intermediate and above) successfully, the student may be awarded a Streamline certificate stating the student’s language knowledge level in accordance with the Common European Framework (C.E.F.).
